In 1865 local businessmen erected crude oil refineries and conducted production until 1901 when production shifted to natural gas from underground formations under present-day McLennan County. By 1920 there were more than 100 businesses operating in KilgORE employing over 1,000 people located throughout downtown and five districts surrounding it: commerce district; industrial district; rural district; black section; and white section which opened up during World War II for patriotism among American troops stationed nearby or commuting into town for work purposes only
