Kilgore, Texas is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, located on the eastern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is one of two towns in Tarrant County that have a post office (the other is Irving). The name "Kilgore" comes from an 1836 treaty between Ulysses S. Grant and Antonio López de Santa Anna, which granted land to Santa Anna in return for his support during the Mexican-American War. The first inhabitants of what is now Kilgore were Native Americans who came to this area from around the Great Lakes region in search of new land to farm. In 1836, General Sam Houston sent a party of soldiers under Colonel James Knopp to purchase 640 acres (252 hectares) northeast of present-day Kilgore from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna andhis band of Mexicans. This land became known as Grant's Ranch after Ulysses S. Grant acquired it in 1846 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Grant's Ranch was originally part of Edwards Ranch, which had been purchased by John Fetterman in 1837 from José Antonio Miranda Alvarado and Otis Peña. After Fetterman died in 1840, his widow sold her share in Edwards Ranch to Echols & Richards for $5,000 cash plus 4% interest per annum on any profits until further notice. According to legend, when Andrew Johnson took office as president on March 1, 1865 he ordered all federal lands northward along the Red River be opened up and given away to settlers including Echols & Richards who would build their homes thereabouts; however this never happened because Johnson vetoed every bill proposing such an giveaway at that time due mainly to opposition within his own party by Texans led by cattle ranchers who saw their competition dwindle with easier access to government land thanks to Abraham Lincoln's addition of east Texas into the Union as well as grants being made available through treaties with Mexico City and Paris following America's victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Hill on July 8th., 1862 In 1870s Juanita Coleman bought some additional property adjacent to Grants ranch east of present day Kilgore From Herenton Polk which included today’s Byers Avenue across from White Sands Lake before selling it off near Present Day Hickory Creek where homebuilders started building homes starting about 1920s . Mrs Coleman named her piece: “Coleman Place” after herself - Mrs Juanita Coleman In 1915 Clyde Davenport donated 1/4 mile (0 km) southeast corner lot for Methodist Church Cemetery next door also used for public school during early 1900s also has Standing Rock Indian Reservation sign out front

After years of struggling, Kilgore finally achieved national attention in 1901 when it became capital of the new state of Oklahoma.
Kilgore was founded in 1873 by John D. Kilgore, a landowner and cattleman. The town grew rapidly and by 1887 it had a school, post office, jail, and three churches. In 1901 the town's first store was opened. By 1910 Kilgore had over 100 residents and two businesses. The town center was developed around the Methodist church and the kiln that produced goods for local merchants. In 1915 Kilgore became an independent city with its own government and police force. Residents built their own homes during this time period. The 1920s were a time of growth for the city as new businesses were established and services were provided such as water access, libraries, and parks. During this decade also saw the construction of the Kilgore Dam which created power for the city until it was replaced in 1957 by the Morehead Dam
