The economic development of KilgORE began with cotton ginning operations started around 1865 by local man George Patton (1847-1920). Cotton ginners would pick up cotton from the fields and bring it back to town for processing into bales that could be sold or stored for future use. By 1865, Patton had built three cotton gins which he operated until 1870 when he moved his business to San Antonio due to increased competition from railroads coming through the area. At that time, Patton also began marketing his products nationally through local agents before shipping them directly to marketplaces across Texas and beyond.
