In 1912, Kilgore became one of the original six counties within Texas designated to form The Lone Star State League of Crimefighters. From then on until 1978, Kilgore had its own sheriffs office and law enforcement officials were responsible for all aspects of criminal justice including traffic tickets, public safety, juvenile delinquency prevention/intervention, insurance fraud detection/investigation (including investigations into product recalls), penal code violations and much more

Kilgore is a town in Howard County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Howard County. The Kilgore post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it closed on July 15, 1970. Kilgore began as an unincorporated community called "Cottonwood" located west of Kilgore on what is now Farm to Market Road 5506. Cottonwood was laid out by James Hogg in 1867 and became a village in 1870 under the name "Oklahoma". James Hogg's father-in-law founded nearby Fort Worth with help from General Sam Houston. In 1875, Oklahoma Territory was organized and Cottonwood became its first capital city. On January 3, 1876, the Prairie Club – composed of wealthy farmers that ran a stock market – met at Fort Worth to choose a new capital city for Texas; they picked Kilgore over Austin because of its advantageous location on the Santa Fe Railroad (the same railroad that connected Dallas and El Paso). Soon after this meeting, cotton traders started moving into Texarkana to buy up land aroundAFort Worth for their plantations so that farming would be profitable again following the Panic of 1893. The post office opened at Kilgore on December 6th 1870; it served as an important stop along the Cimarron Trail between Wichita Falls and Amarillo. In 1915 local officials decided to change the name from "Oklahoma" to "Howard County". Around this time some residents wanted to use their old nickname for neighboring counties: "The Gap", but county officials insisted on using one name only. This led to some confusion when people saw print advertising promoting both counties' names; they assumed one advertisement meant they should switch back to their original nicknames once they got home! After much discussion it was decided that Harris County would remain named Oklahoma while Howard County would be called simply "Howard". The current form of Kilgore's name originated with John Wesley Hardin who came across it while trading cattle near his ranch east of town in 1882 during his unsuccessful effort to purchase land east of Denton for future development he had planned called Dallas Mills Mall (later Arlington Mills Mall). When he went home he reported having found a place locals call 'The Gaps'. He suggested changing it back since no one knew where everything else began or ended - so upon returning home his idea caught fire and grew into what we know today as Kilgarray!

Kilgore was one of the worst hit areas of the Texas-Mexico border during the 1930s. Many people in Kilgore lost their homes and businesses to the Depression. The town’s only way to make a living was as a small-time smuggler. In 1935, John Wesley Hardin, founder of the Dallas Cowboys football team, decided to move his headquarters from Irvington, Texas to Kilgore. Hardin wanted access to all of Mexico’s vast oil and gas resources and he believed that Kilgore would be a great place to do business. He also hoped that by moving his headquarters there, he could help create a new center for Cowboys operations in central Texas. The first thing Hardin did when he arrived in Kilgore was start building what would become known as The Barn. The Barn was originally just a small shed with some barn doors and an old corral attached to it. But soon enough, Hardin had more than just a shed built him a brand new training ground for his Cowboys players. He also started up kiln production in The Barn so that he could produce high-quality bricks for use on stadium walls and other construction projects throughout Dallas and Central Texas. Kilgore quickly became one of the most important cities in central Texas thanks to itsination withDallas and its booming oil industry. It wasn't until after World War II that things started going bad for KilgORE again - this time due to methamphetamine addiction which had taken hold in the town during those years of post-war prosperity (1946 - 1957). In 1957, John Lennon moved into nearby Arlington Heights while still living at home with Yoko Ono (they married three months later) and things quickly went downhill for Kilgore residents who were struggling economically under Lennon's rule: drugs became rampant, crime increased significantly, schools closed down because no one could afford them (Lennon shuttered most of his properties within two years), local businesses failed due to Hendrix's presence alone (Hendrix notoriously looted many businesses throughout downtown Dallas), etcetera etcetera... but let's not get too tangled up in that now; we're here about John Lennon! :-)
In 1865, the Union Army under General Ulysses S. Grant invaded Texas and captured Santa Anna's army at Palo Alto. The Texans then declared themselves an independent republic, and Kilgore became its capital. In 1876, Kilgore was hit by a tornado that killed over 100 people.
