Kilgore, Texas is a small town in north-central Texas on the banks of the Colorado River. The population was 1,774 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is located within Johnson County and is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Kilgore" comes from the Kiowa word "kila," meaning 'settlement.' The first settlers in this area were those who arrived in 1827 by boat from New Mexico Territory. They named their new land after General Andrew Jackson, who had been Commander of Mexican forces that invaded Texas two years earlier. That October, Texans elected Houston as their new state governor and reelected Santa Anna to serve as Lieutenant Governor. As soon as Houston was inaugurated, he ordered General Alarcon to march on Austin with orders to remove all non-citizens from the city limits. This action created a stir throughout Texas because it demonstrated Houston's power and control over his immediate community. However, many citizens saw this unconstitutional seizure of power as an opportunity for Kilgore to develop into a successful agricultural center due to its location on the banks of one ofAmerica's largest rivers. Initially, only men were allowed to own land in Kilgore; however, women soon began growing crops and raising families there as well. In 1878, Kilgore became an organized townsite when two groups of local farmers formed a joint stock company and developed a system of government that still exists today: The Board of Trustees controls day-to-day operations while laymen (the menfolk) hold exclusive membership in committees responsible for major decisions affecting the townspeople collectively. In 1925, Johnson County was added to Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area making it one large city with its own public library, high school and post office; however, despite having everything needed within walking distance (except doctoring services), most residents continued to farm or ranch out their properties elsewhere until World War II when industry moved into nearby Round Rock and demand for housing increased again resulting in development around Kilgore Center which has seen continuous growth since then including numerous restaurants/bars/cafes/shops along with new homes being built on top of it all!

Today, many residents continue to identify themselves as Texans because their ancestorsof fought for Texas during both World Wars I and II. As a result, there are numerous displays throughout the town memorializing those who have gone before – such as an exhibit commemorating World War I veterans who died at Battle Mountain Ranch near Fort Worth; or an exhibit honoring WWII veterans from nearby Midland Beach State Park. Additionally, many local businesses operate out-of-town locations that maintain close ties with their home communities; example, Whataburger operates a location in Midland Beach State Park that features items made here locally), while other businesses like Barnes & Noble offer books and gift cards specific to Texans within walking distance (e.g., Christmas gifts for locals).
In 1836, Andrew Kilgore settled in what is now Kilgore, Texas. He was a settler and general store owner who helped found the town. In 1848, he sold his land to the government for $1,000. The town was named after him and it became the county seat in 1849.
