DuBois and his wife, Henrietta Smith DuBois, who donated a collection of antique rifles and pistols to the town of Kilgore. Kilgore is part of Harris County and is bordered by Montgomery to the north, Houston to the east, Waller County to the south and Midland County to the west. The town was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come over on the USS "Albuquerque". The first post office was established in 1882. The name comes from ancestor John Kilgore who settled there in 1827. By 1886, Kilgore had a school and two churches. In 1902 local landowner Sam Rayman donated 4,000 acres (18 km2) of unorganized territory for development into a town square. The first store opened in 1907. Today, Kilgore has a library, several restaurants and bars, as well as four schools: one public school and three private schools. Kilgore's history can be traced back to its early days when pioneers began settling here during what was known as the cattle drive era of Texas ranching life. Many early settlers were men who had migrated from Ireland or Scotland because they found opportunities for agriculture in this new land that would soon becomeknown as Texas Monthly Country
The town of Kilgore, Texas was founded by the Kiowa people in 1881. The town originally consisted of a few families and a small schoolhouse. In 1916, the town became a part of the Fort Worth Waco Gold Rush region and saw an influx of new residents. The community grew rapidly and by 1930, it had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1940, Kilgore became an independent city and has continued to grow since then.
