Kilgore is a town in Richardson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is part of the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area. It is west of Austin and east of San Marcos. The first settlers in what would become Kilgore were John Gentry and his family who arrived in 1839 from Kentucky. They founded a grist mill on the banks of the Saline River. Gentry married Anna Bible and they had six children: James (1841-1914), John (1843-1937), Robert (1845-1900), Willie (1847-1915), Anna C., and Emma M.(1849-) In 1865, John Aikens built a cotton gin on the current site of the local high school. In 1892, Gilbert Witherspoon organized an agricultural society which became known as "The Agricultural Society of Kilgore." In 1902, Witherspoon donated land to create what would become Kilgore Elementary School. Witherspoon also donated money for a library which was completed in 1906 and named for him. In 1907, Witherspoon donated land to create what would become KIIS Channel 9 TV station with studios on FM 1960 south of town near Richards AFB until it moved to its present location across US 290 east of town in 2005 In 1912,[1] Clyde Hinton established KILQ radio station serving rural areas around Richardson County while also owning KHXZ AM license from Clarendon Hills/Houston which simulcasted KDKA CBS Radio Network affiliate from Houston southeast into Richardson County . Clyde Hinton died suddenly before he could start KMBC radio station serving Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex . His widow started KLIF FM broadcasting from their home that served rural areas northwest Tx until it changed call sign to KOLD on October 3rd 1977

Kilgore, Texas is a small town located in the west Texas panhandle. The community was founded by John Kilgore in 1876 and has remained relatively unchanged since then. The original town plat was filed on November 3, 1876 and was the first farming settlement in present-day Kilgore. John Kilgore came to Texas from Ireland in the early 1800s and began ranching near what is now Kilgore. He became involved with politics and served as a congressman from 1870 to 1875 before moving to Amarillo for some business dealings. In 1876, John Kilgore organized a group of farmers who met at his home to plot out an area for settlement. They named their new town after him,kilgarvee (Irish for "place where cattle are grazed"). The settlers arrived at kilgarvee in large numbers and quickly erected crude homes. The pioneer days were hard but they persevered and soon had a school, store, post office and two churches built. There were also several families who operated horses or drivables which were used for transportation throughout most of what is now Kilgoretown today. It is interesting to note that there are few changes to this gentle old town since it was established more than 100 years ago
