This means that when Texans traveling east traveled through Mexico they would stop at various villages along their route to trade goods and services with their Mexican counterparts

Kilgore was founded by the Caddo Indians in 1836. The town was named for General Johnston, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Texas Revolution. In 1865, Kilgore became a cattle market town when ranching began to spread through the area. The towns growth stopped when railroads came through in the early 20th century. However, today Kilgore is a small but thriving community with a rich history. The first settler in Kilgore was John Withers. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1839. In 1840, Withers married Martha Bowen and they started a family of six children. Over time, other settlers followed suit and by 1850 there were 10 families living in Kilgore. By 1860, most of the original settlers had died or moved away and Kilgore was only known as an Indian village until it was renamed for General Johnston in 1865 following his victory over Mexico at San Jacinto Field on April 14th that year. Johnston's battle with Mexicans at San Jacinto led to Texas becoming an independent republic and opened up new opportunities for agriculture which soon attracted entrepreneurs such as Isaac Brewer and James Fenton who developed large ranches around present day Kilgore proper including Brown Hill (later White Sands) Ranch & Post OfficeCASTLE ROCK RANCH In 1881, Laddus Mfg Co arrived from Illinois looking for land to build mills along Trinity River where it would become Wichita Falls later that year Kansas City Railroad arrived thru Commerce about 1890 finally making possible big city sprawl all around TXUS MILITARY BASEBALL TEAM KILGORE TEXAS STATE HALL OF FAME

The Kilgore area was first settled by the Kountze and Comanche clans in the 18th century. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that this region started to grow as a cotton plantation society. The early settlers were mostly from Tennessee and Virginia. In 1836, John C. Kilgore became the first white settler in what is now Kilgore County when he arrived on horseback from Nashville. He named his new land "Kilgore" after General Andrew Jackson, who had helped him purchase his share of land in 1835. By 1840, there were over 2500 residents living in Kilgore County. The county courthouse was built in 1853 and is still used today.
