By 1905, Kilgore had a population of about 150 people and an agricultural center producing hay, oats, and potatoes. In 1908, the Texas Railroad Company arrived in Kilgore with plans to build a railroad through the town and its surrounding countryside. However, before construction could begin, the townspeople voted to reject the railroad proposal due to concerns over traffic congestion on their main street. In 1912, Kilgore became one of 43 towns in Texas that joined the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area (which included Arlington Heights). With new growth came new problems: many residents of rural areas near Dallas wanted access to transportation but were unable or unwilling to pay for express service; while some businesses refused to open because they did not see potential customers within walking distance; and school trustees argued that increasing numbers of students from outside of Kilgore were making it difficult for locals to provide quality education at home without havingto leave their homes. Ultimately, becauseDallas-Fort Worth had more resources than any other city within its boundaries, nothing ever happened with regards to improving transportation between Dallas and Kilgore. In 1923–24 local citizens working with oilmen J C McAllister and S E Ratcliffe organized a campaign against water pollution caused by oil production operations in nearby Fort Worth which led eventually culminating into passage of state law requiring companies operating within five miles of schools be licensed as such by local authorities
Kilgore is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. The name Kilgore comes from the Kiowa word kilta meaning "to smite." The town was founded in 1876 by John D. Kilgore and his brother-in-law, James G. Jarrell. It is located on the banks of the Brazos River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Waco and 30 miles (48 km) north of Dallas. Kilgore has a school system with six schools: three elementary schools and three high schools. There are also two junior colleges: Webb State Junior College in Webb City and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Kilgore is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,041 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by John Kilgore and Wm. H. Davenport as a trading post on the Rio Grande River. The town name comes from "kilgar" meaning "a small stream." The first store in Kilgore opened on July 1, 1879, and the first post office opened on November 12 of that year. In 1880, Kilgore had a school and three churches: one Baptist and two Methodist. By 1890, there were twenty-one businesses in Kilgore with $1 million in assets. In 1899, the citizens of McLennan County formed the McLennan County Agricultural Society to improve land around Kilgore for farming purposes. That same year saw the opening of the first oil well east of Dallas when Jno Boggs drilled an initial hole at present-day McClennan Road and Oil Field Drive near present-day Lubbock Municipal Airport (now TX A&M University). By 1902, there were over sixty businesses in Kilgore with $2 million in assets; this number increased to seventy-six by 1907 when local businessman James Fenton organized what would become known as Fenton's Mercantile Company Limited (FMC). On October 25, 1907, during World War I American forces liberated McLennan County from Spanish colonial control after successful battle at Monterrey Plains; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Anglo settlement within McLennan County. In 1916–1917 following World War I efforts to reestablish trade along US Route 66 resulted in establishment of McKinney & Fort Worth Railroad Company which completed its tracks through much of central Texas between 1919 and 1923; this company helped spur economic development throughout McLennan County including establishment of new towns such as Kilgore proper – all while providing jobs for local residents who constructed new homes or operated expanded agricultural production associated with postwar growth patterns across both rural/suburban areas within TX & US – most notably Kerrville within nearby Williamson County (& later Alpine) where current day Interstate 10 crosses routes 66 just outside town limits today…..In 1936 William Pugh became mayoralty effective January 1st after election held on November 3rd[18] succeeding Elisha Morrison who resigned due to health problems…..A group led by civic leader Willis Polk purchased all remaining property located eastward extending across FM 929 into present day Slaughter Creek Canyon making it possible for future expansion plans Developers soon built their earliest structures upon site becoming known as 'Kilgar' now Whittier….A fire destroyed much older structure attached originally to original plaza north side SW corner lot then occupied by Mrs Reese Mayfair prior homebuilt circa 1870[24] resulting from extreme weather conditions early 20th centuryContributing factor also severe drought affecting many parts East Texas at that time….By 1937 about 40% complete plan had been realized but due to lack of funding some buildings not yet erected were removed & relocated elsewhere… ensuing yearssaw few major changes until late 1950s when community experienced rapid growth spurred largely by military base addition during Korean Conflict era……………………………………Today's population: 2141
