With just a couple of acres of land, they started farming and raising cattle using traditional methods that still occur today including feeding hay bales into cows while they are barnstorming during roundup season; milking cows early morning before sunrise so they have time to cool down; driving outanders or riders across the fields chasing ticks away from the animal’s hides; harvesting corn during periods of drought; baking bread with ashes from nearby cedar trees which were used for fuel purposes until recently because there is no otherwood that will do; making butter from raw cream if it wasn’t available from cowherds or farmers markets; growing onions, apples, carrots, potatoes etc.; selling eggs door-to-door for $1 each until about 1945 when World War II cut off access to local eggs production which limited egg sales significantly (Lennon et al., 2016); In 1951/52 when Interstate 10 was constructed through this area taking over much of agricultural traffic some people decided to move away due to changed circumstances including lack of jobs after oil exploration began producing natural gas near McKinney TX in 1949 however most residents kept moving here because they like aspects such as good schools, friendly people & easy access to shopping centers like Dallas & Houston Today many descendants live here who continue many traditions such as Malted Milk Ball Recipe passed down by their grandparents

Kilgore, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is the county seat of Medina County. It was founded in 1836 and named after General John A. Kilgore who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant. The town was built on the site of a old mission called San Fernando de Padua, which was established in 1795 by José Antonio García de Mena and his followers from Zacatecas Province in Mexico City. The mission had been abandoned by 1800 when its inhabitants moved to San Antonio de Bexar County because of French military occupation. In 1836, General John A. Kilgore arrived in Medina County to lead an army fighting against Mexican general Santa Anna during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). He chose this location for his new town based on its strategic position between missions San Fernando de Padua and Cerro Gordo Rancho Viejo within easy walking distance of each other." On July 16, 1836, General Kilgore erected a wooden frame courthouse near what is now the intersection of FM 527 and US 377 with land donated by James Fenton Jr., one of Medina's original settlers. The first court session occurred on October 10 that year around which time Judge Wm Hite presided over sessions until he resigned due to ill health on November 6th; Justices Jno Poolman and Paulding took his place until December 12th when they were succeeded by Justice Beasley after he resigned also due to ill health March 11th; Salmon Pemberton then became responsible for all courts proceedings until May 3rd when he resigned too following impeachment charges brought against him by Representative Gilbert O'Hara; finally Absalom Richardson became judge from June 4th until September 15th when he resigned after being impeached himself along with another justice Wm Hite following evidence proving bribery allegations against them." A 36-acre square lot located east of present day FM 527 Street/Old US 377 Road became known as "The Gadsden Purchase". This purchase included some 5000 acres (2 km²) including present day Medina County extending into Lavaca County northward for about 22 miles (35 km), forming what is now central Lubbock County northeastward for about 26 miles (41 km), forming part of today's Wichita Falls metropolitan area northwestward for about 30 miles (48 km), and lying east-northeastward between Austin & Dallas Counties lying primarily within Eagle Ford Districts formed primarily outcropping shale soils deposited there during late Miocene epoch characterized herein as Cedar Mesa Formation interpreted herein as Wegener sandstones but more recent unequivocally conformably dated to early Cretaceous age bearing type locality herein announced" . In 1859 it was reported that property located east or southwest Limits limits our claims - including present day Marathon carrying title thereto - so we presume it must have been sold since we have not found any record thereof since then" ..In 1880 a post office called "Kilgore" was established at an elevation above sea level above where FM 527 & US 377 meet just west side edge Of current city Limits line.. It continued serving till 1915.. In 1915 it closed because mail delivery stopped.. Post Office reopened Nov 1st 1915 at samelocation with new name "Merrillville"
In 1901, the Dallas and Rio Grande Railway built a line from Garland to Kilgore. The railroad was extended to Lubbock in 1907. In 1916, the Texas Railroad Commission authorized the construction of a line from Lubbock to Odessa. The first train reached Odessa on December 12, 1916.
