"It wasn't until after Sam Houston had been elected president that things changed," says LeeAnn Herron, who lives nearby and has been living there since she was five years old. "Houston decided to move the capital of Texas from Austin to San Antonio." So President Polk sent a delegation to meet with Santa Anna and demand that he give up his land in Kerrville so that Travis County could be formed! Santa Anna complied but only because he knew that Houston would not let him go unpunished – Houston later called him a "cowardly man". "During those years [1846-1848], there were no roads or anything like that here," continues Herron. "All people traveled by horseback or wagon." With few other options available, many people started building their own homes – some even adding barns and outbuildings to their properties." "People here didn't have any idea about big business," says Donny Culp, who has lived in Kerrville since 1978 and works for Shell Oil Company as an environmental scientist.
