The history of Kerrville begins with John Kerr and his family who arrived here in 1875 following their purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) of land west of Austin at what is now Springdale Boulevard. This land had been purchased by Kents from Comanche Chief Quanah Parker for $550 total including improvements to a PRESIDIO Adobe house on the site which later became known as “Kerr’s Adobe” or simply “The Adobe” due to its importance within the community. From this point forward, Kerrville would be one of Texas’ most significant early settlements with many residents coming to live here because it offered excellent agricultural soils, access to markets and transportation links to other parts of Texas and Mexico. During much of its early years, Kerrville functioned primarily as a small frontier town with few amenities other than an adobe courthouse/ jail complex which still stands today (rebuilt in 1980). However, over time it began to develop into a moderately sized city with popular commercial districts near downtown and several large residences along Springdale Boulevard outside its limits. By 1920, when local voters approved annexation by Austin proper – making it official that no part of Hudspeth County could remain unincorporated – Kerrville had become one of Austin’s largest municipalities with more than 10,000 citizens residing within its boundaries! In 1925-1926 General James Fenton Kerr came through town on business such that he could celebrate inaugural festivities for Mayor Harry Laughlin at City Hall which included speeches by then-Governor Beaumont Hogg and United States Congressman Tom Campbell before 200 spectators! It was also here that General Fenton met his future wife Isabelle Basset who would play an instrumental role within both her husband’s military career and subsequent political life across multiple county levels before dying suddenly at age 46 five years later at her home just north OF Kinney Bridge Rd., TX 78627
