Kerrville is a small town located in the Williamson County, Texas area. The population of Kerrville was estimated at 10,600 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1876 by John G. Kerr and his brother Jameson Kerr, who named it for General George Custer. The first courthouse in Kerrville was built in 1877 and served as the main seat for Williamson County until 1911 when a new courthouse was constructed on Capitol Hill. In 1865, Confederate general Braxton Bragg set up camp near present day Kerrville to await Ulysses S. Grant’s army's march through the county on its way to battle at San Jacinto Heights. After learning that Grant had arrived and were about to leave, Bragg ordered his troops to retreat and continue their march another day eastward. In 1875, John G. Kerr homesteaded land in what is now Kirby Valley which he donated to the Williamson County Board of Education for use as a public school district. On November 9th, 1907, voters approved an act creating the current city of Kerrville by referendum with a total population of 710 residents (out of a proposed 2,000). The City Council met on December 1st 1907 and passed an ordinance establishing municipal boundaries with Alice because that is where they thought annexation would take place from Williamson County.. On January 5th 1908 Mayor Broun proclaimed “Janus Day” in honor of Janus Catholic Archbishop Jules Michelinie who had donated land four miles north-west of Alice for use as an elementary school site during construction season 1908-1909 A parade honoring Michelinie took place on January 11th 1909 across Jack Road from Stations Catholic Church
