He found what he thought was a good site - a tract of land consisting largely ofvertismentary low hills that would provide fertile ground for growing crops and providing access to water resources necessary for cattle raising - but construction did not begin on the house until 1881 due to lack of money required for such a large purchase at that time. By 1886, five years after purchase, many families had moved into their new homes; by 1890 there were 27 residents living in Kerrville proper and 12 scattered around surrounding farms or ranches).
