This station was called KDKA and it served as the local voice of Radio Corporation of America (RCA) for many years. In 1951, KDKA moved its transmitter to Austin and became an CBS affiliate. In 1975, RCA sold KDKA to The Nielsen Company and it changed its call sign to KFXZ before becoming an NBC affiliate in 2002. Today, KFXZ is one of the most popular AM stations in Texas with a signal reaching all corners of the state! When their daughter married an African American man, they decided to move away from slavery and start anew. They named their new settlement after themselves – Kerrville. This hard work earned them some famous names such as "Rancho Rico", "Brisco", "Champion" and "Cowboy". Many important events took place here during this time: The first election held in Texas (1896) was won by James Kenedy; Texan Rangers fought at San Antonio against Mexican forces; World War I began when America entered;and later brought about by World War II when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Many businesses were established during these years including: The Bank of Dallas (1904), Wernham Hogg Hardware Company (1906), Chisum & Harriman Land Sales Company (1910), J C White Cotton Ginning Works (1920), Empire Oil Refinery(1945) In addition, many people went onto make significant contributions to our local community including: Dr George Medley Bornstein served as mayor 1923-27; Judge Royce Thomas unseated incumbent Harry Bourgeois 1933-35; Ptegaille Fenton co-founded Gold Dust Co ltd 1950 - 1955 Today, there are still many businesses that have been around since those pioneer days like: First Baptist Church (established 1903), NorthernTexaco gas station(opened 1969), ABC Amber Alert System operator Tomball ISD which opened in 1997 There are also numerous historical sites located within or close by Kerrville including: Fort Worth Confederate Monument(established 1865); Baylor University Chapel(1893); John A McCloy Presidential Library& Museum Annex(established 1949); extant oil refineries along Buffalo Bayou such as Shell & Gulf Refineries Inc., Phillips 66 Inc., Marathon Petroleum Corp.; Agricultural Experiment Station No 4(established 1934); Southern Methodist University School Of Veterinary Medicine.(opened 1966).
