Kerrville is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. It is the location of the Kerrville Museum of Art and History. The population was 1,383 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Webb County were Frenchmen and Mexican traders who traveled through the area during the 18th century. In 1835, General Sam Houston purchased land along San Antonio River from Antonio Linares for $2,500. He named his new ranch Santa Anna because he had been baptized into Christianity there two years earlier. In 1840, Houston moved his family south to what is now Kerrville and founded a ranch on what is now First Street. The community developed around this general store and post office which operated until 1860. The first school in Kerrville was built in 1845 by Mrs. Juana Ayer and Mrs. James Fenton as a one-room building on present day Third Street near Center Avenue. In 1846, John Sweeny opened a general store on High Hill Road which became known as “Sweeny”s Corner’s Store’ due to its prominent position within the settlement boundary (now about Fourth Street). By 1850, most of what are now Kerrville were farmsteads with only a few buildings remaining scattered among other rural settlements around San Antonio River Valley north of Austin In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell besieged Fort Hood near present day Temple University before withdrawing across Trinity River towards Dallas On April 14th 1865, Confederate General Joseph Johnston decided not to pursue Union forces retreating northeastward through Temple University Cemetery after they successfully repelled an attack by 8 companies under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at “Granite Ridge” located just east of town limits Kerrville residents supported the Confederacy throughout the Civil War even after their defeat; many served in various units including Company K (Texas Rangers) commanded by Captain John Womack After the war ended on November 9th 1865, most people returned home but some continued to operate businesses such as Sweeny’s Corner Store which reopened in 1870 Development began slowly again over several decades until it accelerated significantly during World War II when nearly all male citizens turned out for military service During World War IIvironnemental improvements such as open water swimming beaches were created nearby In 1951 local merchants formed an organization called The Independent Merchants Association that promoted growth within the community through marketing efforts and networking
