Kerrville is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area. In 1907, the first post office in town was established, and by 1920 it had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 714. By 1930, however, the number of residents had dwindled to 611 due to agricultural production being replaced by oil production in nearby Fort Worth and other cities. However, during World War II local businesses helped support military production within Tarrant County by manufacturing munitions from wood and straw products locally available at low cost. In 1951 the community voted to secede from Tarrant County and become its own municipality under the name of "Kerrville Independent School District". That same year it annexed portions of east Johnson City which had been annexed into Fort Worth as well as parts of east Plano annexed into Dallas On November 2nd 1965 (Dennis Day) citizens in both towns voted overwhelmingly (62%+) not to join forces as their schools were merged into one district making Kerrville an independent school district once again! The idea behind this purchase was twofold: 1) preserve old-growth agricultural land within easy reach of urbanites while creating an open space for recreational use; and 2) create a new centerpiece for civic life within walking distance of all major services (government buildings, business districts), including shopping, dining, medical care, cultural attractions and schools. Downtown redevelopment proceeded slowly until 2000 when plans were put together for what would become known as "The Block" - a major redevelopment project that aimed to bring high-rise apartment complexes (the first such developments in Dallas since Dealey Plaza), hotels/motels/, restaurants/bars/nightlife venues along Uptown Mesa (a commercial district anchored by several large department stores), artspace(an inner ring consisting mostly of low-scale uses), public transportation options (bus routes servicing both Central Park Avenue Baptist Church on McCullough Street near Main Street[2]and Southern Methodist University on White Oak Drive)[3]), retail strips east off IH35/South Highway 620 between Commerce Boulevard and Interstate 45[4]and residential neighborhoods surrounding existing arterial streets north or south of Commerce Boulevard between IH 35W / South Highway 620W / State Road 615E . In keeping with itsplanned community orientation throughout its evolution – from single-family homes through multi-unit dwellings through TOD initiatives – much has changed about Kerrville since it became an official city in 2000 including demographic changes due primarily to rising real estate prices,[5][6][7][8][9] suburban migration,[10][11] annexation by neighbouring Dallas County[12]and various big box store openings dotting every nook and cranny of downtown core.[13],[14],[15],[16]) although many aspects have remained largely unchanged: vibrant nightlife centered around two live music venues located just off Uptown Mesa; world class education available at several universities within walking distance including SMU; retailers offering diverse items such as clothing stores, beauty supply stores and home improvement boutiques; government buildings located close enough so people can access services easily without havingto leave their neighbourhoods;attractions like military bases nearby that contribute significantly towards tourism; dense groves providing natural cover against summer heat
