Kerrville is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, located about 15 miles (24 km) north of Austin. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. Kerrville was named for General James B. Kerr, who served as an inspector general in the Mexican-American War and as a United States Representative from California. The first settlers arrived in 1836 and were led by John Kerr and Hiram Waddell. In 1849, the town was established on a grant from President Anson Jones. The first stores were built around 1855 and the first school was opened in 1865. A post office wasestablished here in 1868, and the name changed to Kerrville in 1870. By 1900, Kerrville had a public library, three churches (Anglican/ Methodist/ Presbyterian), two banks (First National Bank and Peoples Bank), four businesses (two groceries and two dry goods stores), one schoolhouse (grades one through eight), seven residences (four single family homes, three duplexes/ triplexes, one multi-family home), five farms (three beef cattle rancherships with 10 to 12 cows each; two cotton farmerships with 20 to 30 acres of land; one hoggery farm with 100 hogs) and twelve retail businesses including several grocery stores, radio stations( KRLD-TV Channel 3 & KOIN-TV Channel 6 ), six movie theaters( Regal Cinemas & Six Flags Over Texas Stadiums ), two sporting events venues - both professional men's tennis matches played outdoors at Lakewood Country Club while also being used for large photo shows of local dignitaries before state visits or other important events such as parades - and twenty-six agricultural operations including thirteen fruit trees growers; all but three of these operations grew crops that were processed into food products such as corn meal or flour for local commerce or sold directly to consumers on streetside stands that derived their income from merchandise sales alone not contributing any further revenue to the government coffers until after 1985 when agricultural production became more than 50% nonagricultural sources
The city of Kerrville, Texas was founded on December 29, 1876 by Capt. James E. Kerr and his wife Anna. The city's namesake is Captain James E. Kerr, who arrived in the area in 1876 and surveyed the site for a new settlement. The first permanent settlers were brought over from San Antonio by wagon train. The townspeople formed a post office and began trading goods with other settlements in the region. By 1888, Kerrville had a population of 350 people and was considered to be one of the most important locales in Texas because of its location at the crossroads of various trails that connected different parts of the state. In 1912, the town saw its first oil well drilled and production began immediately. After World War I ended, Kerrville experienced rapid growth as businesses sprang up around the drilling industry which continues to this day. Businesses such as seafood restaurants, gas stations, department stores and automotive dealerships have been located within or nearby Kerrville since its inception.
