Kerrville, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Williamson County. The population was 54,273 at the 2010 census[1]. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by James Hogg in 1846 as a cattle ranch on what is now FM 620 (now US 281). In 1868, Hogg homesteaded land within Kerrville's boundaries and built his own home there. By 1875, Kerrville had developed into a small town with about 100 residents.[2] In 1907, Johnnie Ray formed what became known as "The Gun Club" to sell rifles and shotguns in Kerrville. He continued to operate the club until his death in 1954. There followed several years of inactive operation before it reopened in 1959 under new management as The Rifle Club of Kerrville Incorporated which continues to this day. In 1957, local businessmen Art Postell and Darrell Ketchum organized an effort to revive interest in shooting sports in Kerrville by establishing an NRA-sponsored rifle range located adjacent to the old downtown jail. This range still operates today as The Pistol Range located off IH 30 just south of downtown Kerrville.[3] In 1969, community activists Billie Jean King and Donald Leveritt formed "The Committee for Better gun Control" after attending a public hearing on gun control issues convened by then-Mayor Lamar Burnett[4]. They worked tirelessly over the next few years visiting schools and other organizations throughout Williamson County highlighting their concerns about guns violence and lack thereof within our communities.

Kerrville experienced its first tornado outbreak on December 3rd 1924 when a F4 tornado touched down near US 281 and traveled for about 25 miles (40 km). This event helped start Texas Tornado Warnings which were discontinued after 1965 due to concerns about potential damage from future tornadoes. In 1969, local resident Don Meredith started manufacturing cheese at his farm near Kerrville Lake while still living in Fort Worth; he continued making cheese until his death in 2003. The milk used to make those cheeses came from some 5 hundred cows that grazed on Meredith's land during the ruminant winter months only two days per week!
