Keller, Texas is located in Midland County, Texas. It was named for Colonel George A. Keller, who had served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was founded in 1879 by John J. White and James Hancey, two farmers from nearby Commerce City. white built a sawmill and store on the spot where he now lives and started to grow crops. In 1887, the city of Wichita Falls was founded nearby and began to grow rapidly because of its location at the intersection of two important transportation routes - the Kansas-Texas Railway and US 84. By 1911, Keller had become one of Wichita Falls' most popular addresses because of its easy access to both businesses and education opportunities. The post office at Keller was established in 1886 and remained operation until it closed in 1954. The first school district in Midland County was organized in 1888, with schools located at Commerce City (now Wichita Falls) and Keller. The first teacher at Keller Elementary School was Lizzie Griggs Richardson; she served from 1889-1893 before moving to Wichita Falls to teach at First Baptist Church there. The first high school graduate inMidland County was Vella Mae Carruths in 1922; she went on to earn her GED from Midland Junior College before graduating from Clarendon High School in 1925! In 1924, voters approved a $3 million bond issue that financed several infrastructure projects including a new courthouse, hospital, water treatment plant, industrial park and small shopping center downtown. Downtown became known as "The Entertainment District" due to its many nightlife venues such as the Cotton Club (later renamed Pinstripes), an amusement park called "The Palladium" (now known as Live Oak Mall) and numerous movie theaters throughout downtown Wichita Falls during this time period! During World War II, Keller played an important role as a military airfield due to its close proximity to Fort Worth Federal Air Terminal which handled all USAF operations within Central Texas during that time! After war ended1945 & after years of being used for military purposes only (due primarily to lack of other suitable sites), much of what is today known about Keller comes from aerial photography taken by United States Air Force photographers stationed thereduring that time! It wasn't until 1974 when then Mayor Don Bogle developed plans for redeveloping downtown into a purpose-built urban living/working district which would include restaurants*, shops*& offices*.
