The town was founded by George Keller in 1881 as a result of his discovery of oil shale near the present-day town site. The oilfield soon proved to be too difficult and expensive to exploit, however, so Keller sold his shares in the field to other investors. He died in 1920 without experiencing any further success with his new business venture. Keller's son, John W., took over father's business and continued it until he sold it to Texaco in 1967. With Texaco gone, Keller's son-in-law operating the company, Darrell Kliese Jr., became head of Keller Oil & Gas after father's death in 1984. In 1990, Kliese Jr.'s wife succeeded him as head of the company. The company has since been renamed Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP) and continues to operate under that name today.
