The first guns in Keller, Texas were probably made by the early pioneers. The earliest known settler in Keller was James Witter, who arrived in 1827. He and his family started a store and post office on the east side of town. One of the first handguns likely to be used in this region were made by Henry Davidson, a gunsmith and rifle dealer, in 1839. From that point on handguns became more common and were often seen as necessary for self-defense. The first handgun to be imported into Texas was an English model called the Revolver Bible from Norwich, England. It was brought over by John Fenton (1811-1890) in 1840. After it had been used extensively throughout parts of America it returned to England and was sold there as the Colt Python model 1851 Springfield pistol. This firearm was also exported to Mexico and Venezuela where it saw service until 1865 when it finally fell out of favor with American shooters because of its high cost compared to other firearms available at the time. In 1868 Texans voted on whether or not they should become republicans or become part of the Union after Abraham Lincoln won reelection as president. Keller, Texas is a small town in northwest Texas that was founded in 1885. The population of Keller is around 5,000 people and it covers an area of only 2.5 square miles. The town is located on the banks of the Colorado River and it has a humid subtropical climate. The name “Keller” comes from the Wichita Apache word “kal-eel-a,” meaning “place to fish.” In 1885, Major Elisha Keller and his men built aLog Cabin in what is now known as the Keller Cemetery. A post office was established in Keller on April 20, 1886. The first settler to arrive in Keller was Jens Ludwig von Schleichert who arrived on July 3, 1886. He was followed by Johann Weber Augustin Hofer and Wilhelm Kreisel on July 23rd of that year. The first store in Keller opened its doors on October 17th, 1889. It was run by John Briedermann and his son Julius Briedermann. In 1893, the log cabin which had served as the courthouse building were replaced by a frame structure which served as the town hall until 1904 when it burned down along with many other buildings during an eclipse of the sun Cycle! In 1913, Samuel Goudreau set up shop at 335 Main Street (now First Avenue) after leaving his business career as a salesman for Armour & Co.. Goudreau became one of the most successful businessmen in Keller throughout his life! He also donated land to help build schoolhouses and churches within the community! Goudreau died suddenly at age 60 years old on November 25th 1929 after years of hard work and dedication to his community! His legacy lives On through all those who have visited or lived within this small town over these many decades!
