The town began as a Mormon settlement in 1836 and grew slowly until its incorporation as an municipality in 1907. The post office was first established in Keller on November 15, 1907. The first mayor was Willis Withers and the first justice of the peace was J.M. Hodge. In 1912, Keller became an agricultural center with a cotton gin and other equipment used to raise pigs, cattle, wheat and other crops. In 1924, Keller had its own oil well which produced half a million barrels of crude oil per day before it was shut down due to environmental concerns about the well site. For many years after that production stopped there were rumors that someone back home had found another oil well but nothing came of it until finally they struck while the town still slept in 2006 when they drilled a new well less than one mile from where old wells used to be located

Keller, Texas is a small town in Liberty County, Texas. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The town was founded by John Keller in 1879 as a post office and store. In 1893, it became a school district. The post office closed in 1907, but the store continued to be open until 1951. The store then became known as "The General Store". In 1951, the school district merged with another one in nearby Richardson to form the Arlington Independent School District. Keller has had only two mayors since its incorporation as a town: Fenton Witherspoon from 1941 to 1945 and Humble Briggs from 1951 to 1955. A fire destroyed most of what remained of the old general store on Main Street in 1965; it reopened under new ownership five years later and continues to be used as an alternative retail center today. In 1984, Keller voted 5-0 against legalizing gambling within its limits; however, this vote does not appear to have had any significant impact on its residents' behavior; gambling has actually grown more popular in neighboring towns that do support legalized gambling such as Richardson and Garland while Keller's lack of opposition has discouraged it. Today, Keller is home to a small library (the first public library west of San Antonio) which opened in 1991 and also provides internet access for local citizens who may not have easy access to technology elsewhere. There are also three restaurants located here: The General Store Cafe & Bakery which serves breakfast all day long every day except Sundays; Granny's Grill & Bar where you can order anything from burgers and fries up until dinner time; and Red Lobster where you can enjoy their lobster bisque or crab cakes anytime between 11am-2pm Monday through Friday or 11am-4pm Saturdays/ Sundays
