George Keller was born in 1817 in Danzig, Prussia. He arrived in America with his family in 1837. In 1861, he married Mary and moved to Keller County, Texas. They started a farm and later bought land for a post office. The first post office opened on December 5th, 1879. George Keller died in 1942 and his wife continued to run the post office until her death in 1951. The first school opening in Keller was the Indian School which was established on November 3rd, 1880 by Mr. & Mrs. George Ackerley (the Griggsons). In 1886 the Kindergarten was founded under the direction of Drs Jorgenson & Woodward at 208 N Main Street (now part of US 287). The first Elementary School also opened that year under directions from Mrs Ladd & Ritchie with classes starting on September 15thgrades began at what is now known as Steele Middle School #2 located off US 287 east of I-10 between FM 1092nd Street and Steele Road (now Steele Drive)

However, in 1960, the town became an official part of Hudspeth County when it joined Johnson County from Dallas County. The population reached 2,200 by 2000 but has since decreased again to about 1,600 people today. It is one of five communities within Hudspeth County that are considered " Trailer Town" suburbs due to their high levels of density and lack of infrastructure for larger towns or villages.
