Located in central Travis County, Keller began as a farmers' market town that grew slowly due to its remote location and lack of transportation options outside ofDallas-Fort Worth. In 1984, Keller became an incorporated municipality with its own fire department and library system. In 2006, it annexed adjacent townships to form a larger city with a total population of 11,253 residents as part of TXDOT's $481 million master plan for Austin-The Domain area CBD redevelopment project which included new office towers and residential developments including 400 homes for upper middle class families called "Homespun Heights". According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 7,815 people living in Kellertowns - 1% less than the population at 7,833 in 2000 but 3% more than in 2008 when it had 6,948 residents. As of 2016 there are still 2% more people living here then in 2000 despite growth rates outpacing both numbers over that time period by 20%. This growth rate can be largely attributed to annexation by neighboring townships which have seen populations increase by nearly 50%. As one moves into this vibrant downtown core one quickly realizes how much has been done here since previous incarnations - multiple restaurants (including two Tex Mex chains), several high-end boutiques/stores (including Neiman Marcus) and two colleges (UT Southwestern Medical Center and UT Health Sciences Center). There are also plans to add another major university soon (later announced will be UT Arlington) making Keller home to not only some great universities but also some world renowned research institutions – something unheard of just 10 years ago! In recent years there have been significant efforts made Downtown by developers who see this corridor as their golden opportunity: first was Jardine Investments who brought development back upriver along I-10W through Plano before developing 4 blocks west into The Domain; later came Pinnacle Properties who redeveloped several office buildings east across Slaughter Road near UTSA; finally Infinity Realty Group took over development rights from Jardine Investments adjacent to UTSA’s campus bringing an even greater degree(s) or renovation/updates including new stadium space for football games and additional housing units; now another big player – Midland Development Corporation – is committed 100% Downtown with plans for 700+ jobs & 2 hotels on 5th Street next door to UTSA’s Campus Recreation center should things continue trending upward!

In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Kerrville after John F. Kerr, a Congressman from nearby Amarillo. The current name of the town comes from General George Bancroft Kerr who served as Commanding General during World War I and also served as Mayor of Kerrville from 1928-1930. In 1875 James Keller had come to this area looking for land to homestead and he soon became a successful agriculturalist with many acres under cultivation. In 1907 when the townsite was renamed Kerrville it was in response to John F. Kerr who had been instrumental in getting general George Bancroft Kerr elected as mayor of Amarillo two years earlier and then later serving as Commanding General during World War I. As Mayor Kerr saw firsthand how important it was for young people like himself to get involved in local politics at an early age, he wanted to make sure that all future mayors would have access to quality education and live close by so they could be involved in major city decisions too! Keller, Texas was founded by John Keller in 1847. The town was named for him and his brother Jacob, who were the founders of the community. The first store in Keller opened in 1849. In 1870, the first post office in Keller opened. The town continued to grow and develop until it was annexed by Houston in 1880.
