Katy, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. The city was named after Katy Chastain and her husband General Sam Houston. In 1836, Katy became the capital of Mexican Texas under Presidencia Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The citys first school opened in 1839 and the first town meeting took place on April 6th of that year. On September 20th of that year, President Taylor approved the establishment of an independent government for Texan Mexicans within Alamo City boundaries with voting privileges for all citizens over 21 years old regardless of race or gender. On December 3rd 1840, a detachment from Company A, Second Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry march into town to provide security for Gov-er Andrew Brown as he traveled to confront Santa Anna about failing to ratify a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded Mexico's southern borderlands to Texas Santa Anna offered $5 million in gold pieces if Mexico would recognize Texas independence however this offer was not accepted by Texans and no peace treaty was ever ratified between Mexico and America before Mexican Independence Day on February 12th 1846 when American forces confronted Santa Anna's army at San Jacinto Creek outside present day Katy In 1861 during the American Civil War two companies from Union First Battalion Arkansas Infantry (which later became Confederate) were stationed in town while their regiment Newark Armory awaited orders to move upriver; these men had volunteeredto fight for their country but upon learning they were fighting against their own state they changed sides and joined the Confederacy On November 10th 1861 general John Pemberton ordered his brigade (Third Brigade Arkansas Volunteers) into town pursuant to order received from General Robert Ewell south of Buffalo Gap; these Union troops attackedand drove off two Confederate brigades includingCompany A (Arkansas Infantry), causethrowing up galls around buildings until finally withdrawing with heavy losses leaving about 100 men dead - some say as many as 150 who may have been executioners because there is no evidence any prisoners were taken Lieutenant Colonel Archibald McClernand commanding Third Brigade Arkansas Volunteers wrote "When we reached our brigade...the field around it looked like an open graveyard...All over its line there lay scattered dead bodies: officers as well as privates alike; some upon every tree, some lying flat on the ground among’em...No one wanted to go near it." Aftermath local residents erected a large granite monument noting "This spot today markswhere 300 brave men died so thy Union could live" Since then numerous small memorials have been placed throughout downtown Katy including one near today's riverfront park commemorating those killed on November 10th 1861 along with other military veterans who lost their lives in that particular conflict
