Withstood challenges throughout its early years including hurricanes (1874 & 1886), floods (1894 & 1928), and buying land from landowners who refused to sell due to fears that it would hurt their businesses (1902-1920), eventually becoming one of the most prosperous small towns in America with over 1 million residents during its heyday as an agricultural center and petroleum production center.
