Katy, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas that is the seat of government for the county. The population was 5,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. In 2008, Katy was chosen as a "Best Place to Live" by Forbes magazine. The city has been called "the cultural and economic center of its region." The first human settlement in what became Katy occurred in 1835 when three men from Missouri founded an agricultural village on the Brazos River near present-day Tomball. They named it Tomball after General Sam Houston's home state of Texas. When Mexican forces invaded America in 1846 and captured Santa Anna's army at Monterrey, they occupied Katy and other parts of Texan Mexico until their defeat by American forces at Buena Vista on October 6, 1847. In 1850, following passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed slavery in Kansas but kept it legal within Nebraska, settlers began to move into what would become Katy from surrounding counties including Medina and Galveston. By 1860 there were over 1,500 residents living here according to U.S. Census data; most had moved from Missouri or Kansas City because of cheap land prices available hereabouts following the Civil War (see: History of Katytx). In 1871 annexation by Dallas gave new life to this small community with many businesses starting up during that year alone such as Denny’s restaurant (founded 1886) and First National Bank (1892). Commercial development continued through Prohibition (1908), World War II (1939-1945), post-war years (1976-1980), and current growth since 2000 when advances in transportation made downtown places like State Fair Park an increasingly popular tourist destination while also creating opportunities for new businesses such as KFCCorp., Lululemon Athletica Inc., Apple Inc., FedEx Field LLC., Toyota Motor Sales USA Incorporated, Hobby Lobby Stores Incorporated etc.).
