The original name for the town was Tomball but changed to Katy on February 10th that year after Councilwoman Anna Willson petitioned for the change from Tomball because "the people hereabouts are all Texans." On July 12th 1880 local citizens voted to annex Victoria due to increasing growth in East Austin Township andVictoria became official when annexation took place on October 15th that year. By 1890 there were over 2200 residents living within limits of present day Katy proper with over 3000 more residing outside it boundaries including Richmond Heights which had been annexed by the city on May 8th 1893.* *According to oral history research conducted by City Historian Dr., Darrell Krumholz “Richardson’s incorporation into [Katy] established their claim as one of America’s great small-town communities—an outcome they would maintain until dissolution in 1994 when they merged with Austin† [*See also:* "City History - Kipling Park"].
