Katy, Texas is a small town located in the southeastern part of Texas. It was named after Katy,Texas the capital of the Confederate States of America. The population of Katy peaked at over 100,000 in 1910 and has since declined to around 60,000 today. However, its history and culture are still very strong. The first inhabitants of what is now Katy were Native Americans who lived on the banks of the Brazos River. They hunted deer and hogs, but also gathered crops and made baskets out of cane. The area that is now Katy was settled by European immigrants in 1836. These settlers were from England and Ireland. When they arrived in present-day Katy they set up shop on an opening near the present day intersection of US Highway 59 and FM 2362. The original name for this location was Clear Creek Settlement because it had a clear creek running through it. In 1839 Texas becoming a state gave new life to this settlement as people began looking for land to settle due to new discoveries in North America including oil reserves under Houston Bayou (now Buffalo Bayou). In 1840 Hockaday started homesteading some land east of Clear Creek Settlement which he called Newton’s Mills after his friend Nicholas Newton who had come overland from England with wagonloads of goods attempting to establish a trading post at this location (Newton had earlier founded Wichita Falls). By 1849 there were 10 families living here making Newton’s Mills one of the most important settlements in early Katy history; it continued to be so until about 1870 when cotton farming became more prevalent hereabouts. The town site where Newton’s Mills stood was surveyed by John Fenton during February 1st, 1851 while he was surveying what would become present day downtownHouston TX along with other townsite surveys done throughout Lower Colorado River Valley during 1850-1857 inclusive including unincorporated areas lying between these two rivers: Red Rock Canyon/Tomball County line eastward to Sam Rayburn Dam on Sabine River then southwesterly along Tomball County Line thence easterly along Sabine River To Trinity Lake Then westerly via Trinity Lake into Houston County

After annexation, much growth took place within the new city limits as businesses moved into what is now downtown Katy. Today, downtown is home to some of the most important cultural attractions in TX including the Sam Houston Museum of Fine Arts and Stonington Square Park.
