Katy, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas and the seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 581 at the 2000 census. The name Katy comes from the Kiowa word katy (meaning "place where water buffalo grazed"), which is possibly derived from Arapaho or Apache words meaning "the place where they found salt." In 1846, General Sam Houston's forces passed through this area on their way to battle Mexico City; one day after passing through, Houston's men discovered a salt lick in what is now Katy and named it for the then-missouri capital of that era. In 1847, Stephen Fenton built a farmstead on an old mission land grant called Hockaday Creek about four miles east of present-day Katy. On July 16th, 1848, he married Rebecca Watkins at Hockaday Creek. The following year on October 25th, 1850 (the day after Mexican independence), Fort Bend County was organized with danville as its first county seat. On December 15th of that same year (1850), James Bowie purchased 1/4 mile northeast ofpresent-day downtown Katy from John Sitton for $2 per acre. On January 7th 1861, Bowie became general agent for Brazoria County when its creation was announced by Governor Anson Jones effective February 9th - six days after Houston's inauguration as President sanctioning Confederate secessionist policies under the banner " Lone Star Republic". On January 14th 1861 Pratt & Whitney erected their first steam engine near present-day Brownwood within spitting distance of Independence Hall - less than three months before America had entered into Civil War II In 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman burned down Springdale Presbyterian Church southeast of town in retaliation for Confederate General Robert Ewell burning Fort Worth federal buildings en route to march on Dallas during Operation Crossroads; Springdale served as temporary headquarters for Union forces besiegingDallas until March 1865 when it reverted back to Confederate control The Battle of Bigby Woods took place near present-day downtown Houston between April 6 & 8 1863 during the American Civil War while Union Major General Pemberton was besiegingHouston; due to high casualties suffered by both sides at Bigby Woods, no formalized results were ever achieved beyond local folklore
