They told him about an ancient people named the Guadalupe Hidalgos who had once ruled this area and was now extinct. Johnston then decided that this was where he wanted to settle because it would be close to Mexico City and its resources. He soon started building a fort at what is now known as Houston Heights on Commerce Street in downtown Katy. Johnston's fort became known as Fort Sam Houston after General Sam Houston helped liberate Texans from Mexican captivity in 1837-38

In 1919, Johnnie Kaylor died suddenly at the age of 54; Howie Kaylor took over as patriarch until his death in 1951. The late Howie Kaylor is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery near downtown Lubbock with his wife Jenni (née Hargrave).
