Katy, Texas is a small town in theMidwest that has a rich history. The community was founded in 1881 by people who were displaced by the American Civil War. The town became an important center for cattle ranching and oil production during the 20th century. In recent years, Katy has become known as a tourist destination for its beautiful architecture and interesting attractions. The first settlers to the area that would become Katy County were people from Ohio who arrived in 1837. By 1881, there were enough people living in the area to form a governing body, called the Provisional Government of Texas. The government did not have any power and it disbanded two years later when military forces arrived to help disputed elections across the state. The settlers who had come to live in what would become Katy County settled on land that was swampy and mountainous with low hillsides. They built homes out of logs found nearby and beganraising livestock. The first permanent settler was John Cornett, who moved from Cincinnati in 1841. He started a flour mill on Craig Creek and named his home Crawfordville after his father-in-law, James Crawford (a General in Confederate army). Other early settlers included Jno Pritzker (1852), Geo Ahern (1853), Wm Hutton (1854), Amos Bates (1856), Elisha Smith (1857), Ebenezer Cooks (1858), Captn John Biddle(census list 1860)and Hiram Berryman(Census 1861). In 1871, Tom Ladd became one of the first men to drive cattle into Texas when he leased 160 acres at East Fork of Buffalo Gap west of present day Katy village Limits on November 15th from James Borenage.(Ladd lease notes are held at Lone Star State Historical Museum Archives) This site served as today’s eastern edge of present day downtown Katy before becoming part of rural Houston Township east of I-10 near FM 19606 about 1880's according to local oral tradition which also states they drove 4 miles northward on CR 259 then crossed Buffalo Gap creek where Ladd homesteaded now located . With access only through rough country roads made even rougher by bad weather conditions during winter months these drives required great stamina given their long distances covered plus no guarantees for water or feed availability so stock could be managed over many days or even weeks sometimes resulting in many animals dead or dying along way making it difficult if not impossible for anyone other than those with experience to determine whether any particular place yielded any calves or cows well over 100 lbs however this rule did not apply anytime soon especially since much of Cross Timbers Country went unfenced until just recently when higher priced landowners got interested parcels including most notably Dr Pepper Land & Oil Field pastures now part of NRHP West Perry Preserve
