Jacksonville, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 792 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-smallest city in Texas and the fifteenth-most populous city in Houston County. Jacksonville is also one of two cities with a population over 1 million (the other being Los Angeles). The area now known as Jacksonville was first settled by Texans in 1836 as part of the Santa Fe Trail westward from Austin. The land that would later become Jacksonville was granted to Colonel James Wilkinson by Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for his military services during the Alamo War. In 1837, Wilkinson founded what would become known as United States Ford on what is now State Highway 90 just outside present day Jacksonville. United States Ford became one of America's most important cotton plantations and remained an important center of agriculture until well into the 20th century. In 1847, following Mexico's independence from Spain, General Sam Houston appointed Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton as commander of Red River Campaign against Mexico to drive out Mexican forces from their holdings in East Texas and southwest Louisiana. On November 16, 1847, Fenton's army reached Fort Worth and began operations against Mexican General Vicente Guerrero at San Jacinto Creek near present day Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. After seven days of combat including skirmishes nearpresent day Arlington Heights and Plano, Tex., Guerrero withdrew his army under protest to Monterrey and never returned to find himself confronting American forces again; this event is commonly referred to as "The Battle of San Jacinto." For his actions during Red River Campaign, Fenton received the Medal of Honor from President George Washington on December 2, 1797; he also became oneof only four men ever awarded both Medals simultaneously (the others were Samuel Morse and John Quincy Adams). On July 4th 1830 Captain Andrew Jackson arrived at Jacksonville with USS Constitution captained by Commodore John Rodgers who had come ashore onshore pursuant to orders from Zachary Taylor governor of Kansas Territory after learning about Indian uprisings along the Rio Grande south of Wichita Falls (now Dallas/Fort Worth)

Jacksonville, Texas is located in Collin County and has a population of around 66,000. The city was founded on July 16, 1837 by General Zachary Taylor, who named it for the then-new Orleans City in Louisiana. The area that now Jacksonville was first inhabited by the Wichita people. They were displaced by the Comanche when they attacked the Wichita village of Goliad on December 10, 1836. The Cherokee forced the Wichita to leave their land in what is now Collin County and moved into what is now Dallas County. When Fort Worth became a national capital in 1845, Jacksonville became part of Fort Worth and soon after took its name from General Taylor's new city. The early days of Jacksonville were very unsettled. There was no government or police force until 1840 when Andrew Hogg organized a volunteer militia to protect settlers from Indian attacks. This militia eventually became known as the "Jacksonville Battalion." In 1841 President James Kenedy ordered all military posts in Texas closed because of budget cuts. However, with help from Hogg, Captain John Denton formed a mounted unit called Arizona Rangers to fight Indians and protect settlers near San Antonio (now Austin). In 1861 Jacksonville contributed 3 men to Confederate forces against Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Afterward Jacksonville lost much of its business life due to prohibition laws passed by Texas; however they continued to exist as an agricultural center until after World War II when they lost most of their marketability due to changes in technology and improved transportation facilities across the US
Jacksonville was founded by the Spanish in 1763 as a trading post on the mouth of the Arkansas River. It grew rapidly as a center of cotton production and became an important slave trade destination. In 1836, it was sacked by Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution, and quickly regained its status as a free city. Jacksonville's growth helped make it one of the most prosperous cities in Texas during the 19th century. The city was annexed by Houston in 1902, and then by Dallas in 1908.
