In 1830, Captain John Smith founded a trading post at Deepogue Bayou on the mouth of River Brant near what is now downtown Jacksonville as part of an effort to open up this large cattle country that had been under Spanish control since before Mexico became independent from Spain. A year later he sold out his post to Captain Amasa Sharp for $2,000 cash and began trading with Indians located along the Arkansas River as far east as Wichita Falls, Texas Territory and as far west as San Antonio de Bexar County
