Jacksonville, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas that is the county seat of Jackson County. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and has a population of 805,879 as of 2019. Jacksonville was founded in 1836 by Captain John Fenton and was named for English general Sir John Jaguars (1768-1847), who had fought in Spain and Mexico during the Mexican–American War. In 1841, Jacksonville became an independent municipality with a mayor and council; it stayed this way until 1907 when it became one of twenty-eight townships within Jackson County. The first post office in Jacksonville opened in 1840. The downtown area began to take form after World War I when businesses started moving into what would become known as "the district." The growth continued through the 1920s with new buildings being built on South Fourth Street near present day State Highway 361 (now Interstate 10). By 1930, most of downtown had been developed but much of North Fourth Street remained undeveloped because it was reserved for future use as an agricultural market place or industrial park serving both local farmers and out-of-town visitors. The cotton gin boom brought new life to downtown Jacksonville during and after World War II with small factories dotting Midtown Square which grew increasingly busy with workers coming from all over Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas City, Fort Worth and even Japan to work at JAGF mills throughout America's wartime production drive. Some notable landmarks associated with this time include Midtown Square's original Cotton Exchange Building which still stands today (now used as a restaurant), JAGF's soon-to-be massive engineering plant located on Park Avenue just east of Civic Center Drive/N First Street (later renamed Parkway East Boulevard) which housed everything from looms to turbines to cars before it was razed in the late 1970s due to pollution concerns; Nathan Hale High School also located on Park Avenue south side opposite Midtown Square where students were sent for their school senates between 1899 until 1951; during this time period too many schools were constructed across town preventing any contiguous development along Third Street between Civic Center Drive/N First streetdowntown AME Church north side alley west side parking lot east side alley north side alley northeast corner intersection State Highway 361 Boulevard Astrodome

The city saw its heyday in the late 19th century; it experienced significant growth and development following Reconstruction in America. However, after World War I there was significant decline in population and business until the 20th century when Jacksonville again experienced growth and revitalization.
