Jacksonville is a town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 29,706 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Antonio County. Jacksonville was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish settlers who named it for Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton, an Englishman who had arrived in the area in 1825 to explore new land purchase from Mexican traders. At first the town consisted of only a few homes and a school. The first post office was opened in Jacksonville on December 14, 1836 by Captain John Dickson of HMS "Vanguard" with nine mailbags sent from New Orleans. The town grew rapidly as people came to live and work near the port on the Red River. In 1840 Jacksonville became part of Bexar County when that county was created from parts of San Antonio and Tarrant Counties. In 1861 Jacksonville annexed portions of Bastrop County including Templeton and Mission Trails which formed Bastrop City; this annexation led to a name change for Jacksonville to Bastrop City/Bastrop after Mayor James Hogg changed its city charter to allow consolidation of all local governments under one roof without having to obtain prior approval from each municipality's governing body. As cotton became more important than cattle raising in Texas during the early 19th century, farmers began moving into what is now eastern San Antonio County looking for good farmland that would not be taken up by cattle growers or destroyed by floods caused by rains during winter months. By 1870 there were over 100 families living in Jacksonville alone and it had become an essential stop on road trips between Houston and Dallas because there were no other towns within twenty miles ( thirty-six kilometers) of either city center where travelers could stay before continues travel southward).
