In 1840 Tomball trader Nathaniel Brown settled near present day downtown Jacksonville after purchasing land from pioneer David Hogg for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $ ). Brown developed what is now known as Old Town which he called "The Battery". His colony prospered until it was destroyed by a tornado on July 14, 1851 which killed more than 100 people including many prominent citizens such as Coles & Powell cotton merchants and planters Edwin Ladd & Alexander Henderson;[4] signer/builder of The Texas Constitution Samuel Houston;[5][6] two-time Mayor of Dallas John Gifford;[7] brothers Elias Howe & Levi Howe physician/scientist/naturalist ; Asa Hutchinson attorney and judge; Wm Silliman saddler; Jno Atherton blacksmith; Drayton Painter photographer (1876–1927); Phebe Jones historian (1846–1923). In 1865 Union general Jubal Early attacked Jacksonville while its residents were attending church services outside their town center following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation issued three days earlier. Many residents retreating into town took shelter inside Trinity Episcopal Church which was then destroyed by fire retardant shot during Early's advance towards Jacksonville on October 8 that year followed by skirmishes between Union troops and Confederate forces around nearby Fort Worth.[8][9][10] This event helped spur development within Jacksonville along what would become Main Street today but also resulted in some loss or damage to many homes and businesses along streets such as New Market Road and First Street since gunfire continued intermittently throughout early 1865.[11] The scene where Trinity Episcopal Church burned down still remains vacant today although over time both main street frontage have been rehabilitated with several large new restaurants/bars opening up lately including Zuka's Pub,[12][13][14] Bullfrog BBQ,[15], Live Oak Brewery,[16][17], Sunday Kosher Store - one block south on First Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue North - started open late last year,[18][19],[20]) Just before midnight CST on November 25th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell Jr., leading 10 cavalry troopers under command of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Shelby made contact with Union troops camped near modern day Irving Plaza off FM 247 about 4 miles northeast of old town just outside what is now suburban Arlington Heights suburbia when they led an ambush against these same troops resulting in 1st Lt.(Col.) George Armstrong Custer being fatally wounded (& later executed) & Trooper Edward Robinson being captured alive ([21]), this event becoming known as "Jaxomind".[22]). On February 3rd 1870 Daniel Boone purchased 640 acres northwest corner lotofFirstStreet& MainStreeto buildtheFirst PresbyterianChurch jacksonvillencity became plattedonMarch1st 1870withanacreagefor every 50 families owning land grantedby Governor James Polk less any homestead titles claimed before date:[23]. Jacksonville, Texas was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and the other Texans who were seeking to create a new capital for the Lone Star State. The city became an important center of commerce and culture in the Texas Republic, and it served as the temporary capital from 1839 to 1845. In 1846, Jacksonville was officially named the state's new capital, and it has been its permanent home ever since. The history of Jacksonville is intimately connected with that of its namesake city. When Sam Houston moved his headquarters from Huntsville, Alabama to Jackson County in 1836, he did so because he saw Jacksonville as a strategic location for his fledgling state. As Dallas began developing into what it is today, Jacksonville effectively fell out of favor as a political powerbroker within TXCAL during the late 19th century due largely to its lackadaisical approach to development issues compared toDallas’s more aggressiveblogspot-like approach (culminating with Jacksonville’s incorporation into Dallas Township on October 1st 1893). However, even after leaving TXCAL altogether Jaguars managed to keep alive some semblance of local self-government until well into the 20th century; they did so through their various chamber organizations such as: The Municipal League (1898-1902), The Republican Club (1920-1924), The Arts & Crafts Club (1927-1929), etc.) This last instance notwithstanding however; overall there remains little evidence that Jaguars exerted any real influence over local development or politics outside their own backyard until quite recently when documents started being declassified which suggest otherwise
