Jacksonville, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of El Paso County. The site where Jacksonville now stands was chosen for its strategic location between two trade routes – those traveling from Mexico City to Texarkana via Haskell Key and Wichita Gap, and those travelling through Pecos Pass from Dallas to San Antonio via Fort Worth – giving it control over both points on these routes. Spanish settlers arrived during Plan de San Marcos (1836–39), which aimed to promote Anglo-American settlement in East Texas following Mexican independence from Spain. On July 24, 1837, General Sam Houston sent approximately 1,200 Texans under Colonel John J.[1] Peña[2] across Buffalo Bayou into what is today Jackson County to claim land east of Carrizo Springs.[3] In 1845 Jacksonville became a part of El Paso County when that county was created from parts of Travis and Webb counties; however, until Hughes v Alvarado (1948), all elections were held within El Paso County instead of within Jackson or El Paso Counties as they are now done statewide. In 1912 Jacksonville annexed unincorporated portions of Hudspeth County including much present day Arlington Heights; this annexation did not take place because Arlington Heights is located within Hudspeth County but because then-Mayor Waddell refused to allow Jaguars to annex land without his approval so as not to compete with Austin’s municipality chartered by Governor James Folsom in 1911 which at that time had almost twice as many inhabitants as Jacksonville did people.[4] On November 3rd 1898 mail service began between Houston and Pecos along Government Road which later became known as IH 35; this was possible due to increased rail traffic due westward movement of cattle on Highway 66 across Big Bend National Park towards New Braunfels after shipments stopped coming down Buffalo Bayou past Carrizo Springs due to concerns about pollution created by livestock operations near Lake Pleasantburg reservoir while supplies were being transported upriver past Moro Lake on Hwy 26A.(now US 281). Ulysses S Grant visited Jacksonville on January 9th 1865 while stationed at Huntsville Barracks with his armyforces before his march through Central Texas ending at San Antonio; he submitted proclamation number “45” designating January 12th 1865 as Creek Nation Day throughout your Territory [of TX]; also knowed variously as Indian Wars Day or Thanksgiving Day among our brave men who fought thereon It should be noted that although Union troops sacked Planters Home Plantation & killed all 5 children inside just prior w/Gen Joseph Wheeler early morning hrs Oct 16 '68 (during Civil War) numerous raids & burnings took place subsequent Dec 7 thru 25 '68 against plantations owned by Col Franklin Polk too... such events are still remembered hereabouts every year since then!
