The cotton gin began crop production around this time; however, it did not become a major industry until after World War II when a new port was developed near downtown Jacksonville by dredging several miles (8 km) of river then built on top of it using shipbuilding techniques available at that time. As shipping increased along the Tampa Bay coastline during World War II, so too did demand for housing and other services within Jacksonville proper; such growth led to new development all around downtown including what is now known as Old Town which started out as a collection of warehouses built between 1865 and 1870 called Warehouse Row just south of downtown along Causeway Street). During this time period many African Americans found employment either working off-farm or joining local gangs that controlled much criminal activity within their neighborhoods - some incidents leading to Bloody Sunday cases are still remembered today across Duval County: an American Civil War veteraniously killed three black men – one accidentally shot while he chatted with his friends outside his home prior to dinner on April 14th 1865; two weeks later another man died after being stung by a jellyfish while swimming offshore near Belle Glade; federal agents raided Jackson's grocery store early Saturday morning Apr 19th 1915 after suspicions aroused among local merchants about firearms being sold without licenses; resulting in ten arrests and $2,- 000 worth (at that time) in fines levied against twenty business owners implicated including four commission merchants [“Gang Wars: Recollections From Old Town” New Society Publishers 1977] - these events helped create a sense among whites throughout Duval County that they needed to exercise caution before engaging Black citizens directly during this period otherwise “things could get pretty bad pretty fast” [Darrell Ladd et al., “A History Of The Black Race In Duval County Florida 1861-1961″ University Press Of America 1979].
