This process continued through 1865 when all slaves within Confederate territory had been emancipated except for those held by Master John Brown at Harpers Ferry ( Virginia). Black Jacksonians formed their own social fabric separate from white society but closely associated with their African heritage throughout much of this period. After World War II began, businessman James Meeks turned downtown into one of Jacksonville’s thriving commercial districts known as Midtown/Uptown/Old Town/New Orleans Row /Central Avenue South corridor/. At its peak between 1945-1950 Midtown contained nearly 200 businesses employing 3,500 workers – making it one of America’s largest concentrations of business activity at that time! While downtown redevelopment slowed down somewhat during the late 1950s and early 1960s due to increased competition from other cites within Florida – such as Miami Beach – eventually Midtown recovered and today remains one of Jacksonville’s most vibrant areas with Numerous restaurants and shops plus several apartment buildings dating back to prewar days that offer stunning views across Mobile Bay towards Spanish Fort

By 1870, Jacksonville had developed into a major cotton town with over 1,500 acres of land dedicated to cotton production. There were also several sawmills and other mills in the city. On December 12, 1876, Jacksonville became one of the original fifty U.S. states when it was ratified as an independent republic within the United States.
