During World War II, Plant No. 5 at San Antonio Army Ammunition Plant produced more ammunition than any other plant in America; it helped contribute to Allied victory over Nazi Germany. Today's downtown core still preserves much from pre-war Irving: brick buildings dating back to 1907 line Main Street; two large 12-story clocktowers flank Washington Avenue between First Street and Summit Avenue; Union Station—the first train depot on the continent—stands just east of I-35W outside downtown; and numerous smaller businesses clustered around Sixteenth Street between Second Avenue and Elmira Road form one continuous commercial district with strong cultural ties to adjacent Dallas/Ft Worth communities still today
