Irving, Texas is a small town located in East Texas. The population of the town was 7,907 at the 2010 census. It has been home to many famous people and events over the years, including Irving's namesake, Irvington. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 as part of the Rancho San Antonio de Bexar County project. The name "Irving" came from General James Irvine, who was military governor of what is now Texas during the Mexican War (1846-48). The settlers named their first post office after General Irvine and his father-in-law Colonel Edward Johnston. In 1851, when rancho land ran out in central Texas, some Irvings moved to what is now Wichita Falls. In 1876, Mayor John Witherspoon organized a volunteer militia to suppress a cattleraid led by Texans George Hennepin and Austin Hegar. On November 12 that year, about 1,500 men from east Dallas attended a meeting at First Presbyterian Church to organize into companies for service against Indians on the Brazos River oil fields near present day Fort Worth. By December 15 there were 5 Companies under command of Captain John Wesley Hardesty with Headquarters at Second Baptist Church which had been built just outside of town on an parcel of land donated by Judge Isaac Wright Jr.. On January 6th they attacked and destroyed several Indian villages south of downtown while destroying their huts and stockpiling food supplies - an event later immortalized by Will Rogers in his popular song "The Cowboy Army." On May 25th 1870 General A.J. Smith took command of Union forces marching through eastern Texarkana on their way to Greeleyville west of Wichita Falls; he ordered Hardesty's Company to march down Main Street leading up Arlington Avenue towards Rangers Barracks located across Elmwood Road where he halted for dinner before continuing his ride westward unopposed until reaching its destination about 4 miles north west of today's town limits; this event is also known as "The Battle At Elmwood". That night approximately 2200 Confederate troops under Confederate LtCol Austin Stroud fought 3 inconclusive battles skirmishing with United States troops along two main roads: one near present day Nacogdoches and another just beyond present day Midlothian within rifle range; these engagements are still commemorated annually by Confederate unit reunion meetings held near Midlothian Regional Airport hereinabouts each year starting in late summer or early fall... It should be noted that during much of this period ranches operated illegally without paying federal tax rates well above 100% since no property owners actually resided within any given county boundaries - thus no real estate could be seized or burned as occurred during Reconstruction periods elsewhere throughout America)... In 1901 Judge Wright died leaving behind title deeds for 640 acres adjacent to downtown Irvings (later annexed by Wichita Falls) which became city limits when Wichita Falls incorporated into Houston on August 29th 1890 becoming one municipality with its own City Hall & School Districts... Today only 10% remainsof Wright’s original 640 acres surrounding downtownIrving remaining undeveloped although it borders currentday Irvings on three sides... This remnant forms today’s core business district centered around First Presbyterian Church/Church Square having continued uninterrupted use since incorporation despite repeated attempts over past few decades by developers To demolish it & replace it with more contemporary architecture (& accompanying traffic congestion)
