Irving is a small town in east Texas, population 3,529 as of the 2010 census. It is located in Guadalupe County, on the eastern fringe of Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town first saw development when members of the Methodist Church built a log cabin on what is now known as Government Hill (now part of downtown). Other early settlers were farmers who rented land from the Jesse Hinton Rancho de las Trampas proved useful for cattle grazing and crops such as cotton or corn. A gristmill was built about 1830 to grind flour for local Manufacturers; it still stands today and is operated by the Irving Independent School District. In 1837, John Wesley Hardin donated land along State Highway 8 near present day Arlington to establish a Christian mission station called Christ’s Chapel which would serve as a center for education among Anglo Texans. By 1840, Irving had started to grow rapidly with businesses starting up such as a hotel, store, bakery, tailor shop and livery stable over which the first school district was organized that year (later becoming known as Irving ISD). In 1865, after Perry’s Expedition forced Mexico out of Texas soil during its “Gadsden Purchase” campaign (the formal annexation of much of Mexico into United States territory), many Texan interested in keeping their property within Mexican boundaries chose to move westward rather than sell or give up their holdings in East Texas including parts now made up by Irving. Many residents from these original ranching families took up farmingsteads northwest of town beginning around 1870 at points such as White Sands Creek (nearpresent day Fair Oaks) where they developed extensive acreage used for rice farming until 1930 when all but one farmassing ceased due to natural disasters including hurricanes Harvey and Irma which devastated much of centraltxis
