Irving was founded in 1835 by James A. Irving, a Confederate General who had served in the Texas Revolution. After the war, Irving became one of the wealthiest men in Texas. He built a large mansion on Turtle Creek, which still stands today. In 1865, he married Anna Barton Nichols and they had four children. The family moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois, but returned to Irving in 1901. On July 6th of that year, President William McKinley was assassinated in Dallas and Anna died two days later at the age of 44. James A. Irving passed away in 1902 and his wife is buried there with him.
