Irving, Texas is a small town located in southeastern Travis County, Texas. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Irving is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Town of Irving was founded by pioneers on November 9, 1846 as a result of the Donation Land Claim Act of 1847. The land that now makes up Irving was donated to the United States government by Mexico in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town's name comes from General David E. Johnston's Creek Settlement, which was located near what is now downtown Irving. In 1890, Griggs and Hitchcock opened their first grocery store in what is now central Irving and it remains one of the most popular businesses in town today. Other early businesses included Jardine's Pharmacy and Ladd-Peebles general store before they merged into Griggs Hitchcock and Company in 1922. In 1951, Griggs Hitchcock & Company became Griggs-Hitchcock-Ladd Companies Incorporated when it merged with Wacoalco Industries Incorporation to form Wacoalco Industries Corporation (WICO). WICO built some of America’s largest shopping centers including Griggs-Hitchcock Plaza (now home to Macy’s), Southpark Mall (now Home Depot), and Rosemont Place Shopping Center which opened on October 1, 1984. It wasn't until 1990 that local artist Woody Guthrie moved from his farmstead near modern day McKinney to live in what would be become known as "the Woody Guthrie House" within walking distance of downtown Irving after years living outside Nashville due to noise concerns at his previous homespotters' association barnacle basecamp on Cedar Hill Road northwest of present day Central Park Drive NE.
