Hutto is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas and it is the seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It lies along Interstate 35W, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Austin and 60 miles (100 km) south of Dallas. The community's name comes from Kuhta, an Aztec chief who lived here before the arrival of Europeans in Central Texas in the 1700s. Kuhta's people built a settlement on what is now Hutto Creek in 1795, and named their new town after him, Hutto being an Aztec word meaning "place where trees grow." In 1836, the first post office was established in Hutto; it continued operating until 1907. In 1881, two brothers - James A. Payne and John Waddell - founded Payne Bros., general Merchandise Merchants on Main Street near present-day Slaughter Lane. From this business base, they developed a large grocery store and other businesses over several decades that helped Hutto become one of central Texas' most important cities for commerce and culture during its early years as a republicdating back to 1845-1848. In 1908, local farmers formed the Rutland Cattle Company to purchase 700 head of Kansas City cows that had been brought into Texas by railroads for shipment to Chicago through Hudspeth County Agriculturalists Cooperative Extension Service agent Leland Stanford Whitehead as part of his Great Plains Rice experiment Project II . The cattle were raised on 760 acres (250 ha) near Slaughter Lane for four years before being exported to Chicago via Prairie View A&M University Railway Station

Hutto, Texas is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Dallas metropolitan area. Hutto was founded in 1881 as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Wichita Falls and Amarillo. In 1907, it became a city and has since grown to become one of Tarrant County's most populous towns. The first white settlers in what is now Hutto were families from Oklahoma who came overland through Texas that year. They named their new community "Hatooga" after Chief Hahota of the Oglala Sioux Nation. By 1881, the Butterfield Mail had reached Tucker Creek Station and began trading goods with local Indians and Mexicans living along the way. A post office was established at Hutto on December 5, 1881, under the name "Tucker Creek." The present city of Hutto was organized on April 8, 1907; however, due to its small size it did not receive its own municipal building until 1912 when it purchased one from nearby Arlington Heights . In 1907, Arkansas resident J.W. Pratt donated land for a public library in what is now downtown Hutto; construction began in 1908 and completed in 1911; huttorlib opened with 4500 volumes . The current library building dates back to 1978 and seats over 800 people . On October 17th 1915 Union Pacific Railroad (UP) built an depot/railroadcrossing just east of downtown Hutto which served as Amtrak's first train stop outside Chicago Following World War II , much industry moved out of Dallas & other cities into rural Tarrant County & Hutto became known as an agricultural center because so much cotton was grown hereabouts including hogs , cattle
Hutto was founded in 1879 by George W. Hutto and his wife, Sarah. The town originally served as a stop on the Bandera River before becoming a center for cattle ranching and agriculture. In 1902, Hutto became the county seat of Hudspeth County. By 1920, Hutto had grown to become an important commercial and industrial community with a population of over 100 people. The city was annexed by Austin in 1950, and lost its importance after the opening of Interstate 35S in that year. However, Hutto has remained an important cultural and economic center within Austin since its incorporation as a city.
