The first settler arrived in what is now Hutto March 9, 1872 with his family from Palestine Township north of Austin. In 1902, James Hutton Sr., proprietor of the local grocery store and real estate agent for much of Williamson County decided to become an independent municipality separate from neighboring counties due to increasing encroachment by other municipalities on its land base and lack of support from elected officials or citizens alike. This move outraged many residents within Williamson County who saw this as another example of government overreach into their personal lives and businesses; however, Hutton defiantly continued to serve as mayor until his death in 1915 despite widespread unpopularity among his supporters. In 1910, Austin annexed most of Williamson County including Hutton into its jurisdiction but kept Hutton itself unincorporated because its citizens felt that it would not have received any benefit from annexation - something which Austin politicians regularly reiterated during their tenure there).
