The name Hutto comes from the Mescalero Apache tribe's word "huta," meaning "place where people were gathering." The first settler in Hutto was George Waddell in 1885. In 1916, J.B. Hodge and his family settled in Hutto and started the first grocery store there. In 1925, Johnnie Weaver bought a tract of land south of Hutto and founded Weaver Farms which became one of the largest cotton plantations in Texas. After World War II, most of the cotton production stopped because of competition from synthetic pesticides and other technologies developed by American manufacturers such as Monsanto. However, some farms still survive until this day producing hickory wood for furniture or other products such as power tools or wagons; hogs for meat or milk; and vegetables for gardens or markets. Huttoe also played an important role during Texan history due to its location on both sides of the Rio Grande River: On one side was Nacogdoches (now Odessa) on the Mexican border while on the opposite bank was San Antonio de Bexar with its many Missions that provided religious instruction to Spanish colonists who had arrived in what is now Webb County during Alamo Mission period (1836-1846).
