In 1881, John Denton bought Guthrie Ranch from Guthrie and started to develop it into an agricultural community with lumberyards and other businesses that extended into nearby Lampasas and Tarrant counties. In 1907, Waddell Hodges founded Hudsons Bay Company in Dallas to market Canada's first bread product nationally using oxen drawn by horses pulling wagons across country trails that ran through Hurst's valley floor near present-day Lone Star Park south of Interstate 535W. The townsite name "Hurst" came about when company officials decided to place a stop there on their way to another location in order to restock their supplies after completing a cattle drive from Fort Worth up the Trinity River Valley via San Antonio de Bexar County

On November 5, 1912, voters approved an annexation by Fort Worth which made Hurst a part of that city limits1 In 1916, local rancher Waco Boyd donated land to form the current community square where many businesses now sit including Frito Company (now Incredibles), Jamba Juice (now Jacksons), Bicentennial Park (now Bojangles'), Verizon Wireless Headquarters2 and various other businesses3 The Texas School Book Depository Building located adjacent to Main Street served as headquarters for both the Dallas Cowboys football team4 and later for Reagan White House Press Secretary Howard Baker5 before it was closed down in 19886 Hurst had its own newspaper called "The Herald" which ceased publication following World War II7 In 1952, a large windmill was built northwest of town along FM 1422 by developer Cimarron Corporation8 On October 15th 1978 Hurricane Betsy hit Hurst causing extensive damage9 On July 26th 1984 Hurricane Rita caused extensive damage10
